From 1960 to today
At the beginning of the 1960s, there were 230 companies operating in Zai of which 137 manufacturing factories and 61 metallurgical and mechanical businesses. 67 companies belonged to the
commercial sector, 49 of which dealt in
fruit and vegetables. However, there were also 15 service companies (agency offices, forwarding and advertising businesses) and 10 worked in the
food sector. At the beginning of the 1970s, with a 100% increase, the companies based in the area rose to 409, of which 263 were manufacturers. Agricultural product processing in a strategic area in terms of foreign traffic, required further space and so, in 1952, covering an area of
100,000 square metres, the new Fruit and Vegetable Market went into action. In the meantime, the number of companies in the original Zai area continued to grow. These days there are over 600, with more than 20,000 employees. There are still very many
agro-industrial businesses, even if the establishment process was organised to welcome other
activities.
